Capturing a Healthy Foundation for Efficient Operation
Having an accurate digital replica of a hospital, accessibly stored for ongoing management and maintenance, solves many problems for busy healthcare workers.
asBuilt were engaged in 2016 to help Auckland District Health Board capture Starship Hospital, digitally. This would enable them to align stakeholders and suppliers to optimise resource management in the future. The idea being there would be no more lost plans or inaccurate blueprints.
With 88% of the cost of an asset coming from its ongoing operation, it is wise to optimise operational efficiency wherever possible.
Partners
Auckland District Health Board
Scale
Large scale, operational hospital
Services
Capture - 3D HD Scan
Model - BIM Modelling
Problem
Auckland District Health Board needed to capture the precise specifications of the existing hospital to maintain and evaluate the building ongoing.
Solution
A full 3D HD Scan to BIM Model of their complete site.
Outcomes
- Digital replica of Starship Hospital
- A comprehensive as-existing model
Why
Healthcare workers are extremely busy doing what they do best - caring for people. Changes in staff, scarce funding and changing supply chains often results in lost plans, blueprints and maintenance information.
What
To plan for expansion or maintenance, hospitals require an accurate model of ‘as-existing’ infrastructure. This project started as a security assurance project for ADHB and as a future proofing exercise, to enable them to maintain and evaluate the building, with data certainty.
As the project developed, information and building data was added to create a comprehensive as-existing model. The ability to spatially reference hospital data was desirable.
Project Challenges
asBuilt worked flexibly around an operational hospital - navigating the various access channels to capture the complete building in a quick, effective and unobtrusive fashion.
asBuilt completed:
- 3D HD Scan, Survey internally and externally of an operational hospital
- Created a detailed BIM Model of the hospital for planning and maintenance projects
- Stored information on vault
- Managed access for future capital and maintenance projects to the model information for the engineering department
